Jan 9 Gila Bend to Yuma

We have arrived in Yuma where we will probably hang out for the next few days. This is the best place in Arizona for good weather. Rains only 4 or 5 times a year. Day time temperature should be around 18 -20 and nights around 10.

On the way from Gila Bend to Yuma there is a service center , with a gas station, restaurant and store. It is owned by a couple from Calgary who started a date farm and built this business around the date business. All  of the tourist stuff , tee shirts and souvenirs etc plus of course the dates. A lb of Medjools sold for 11.50 us ($15.50 Can).

Dates are grown on Palm Trees , they produce 300 to 400 lbs per tree

This grove would only have a few hundred trees

Once the dates start to ripen they are covered with mesh bags to protect them from birds and animals

Below the trees were dates that had fallen off, some even before they were ripe.

I was able to pick about 1/2 a lb of the ground. Must of them were over ripe ,but still very tasty.
