Feb 15 Sulphur City


Louisiana is the 2nd largest  producer of oil in the US after Texas. Until fracking brought up the Texas production Louisiana was number one. It is also the second largest producer of Natural gas. All through this area almost every business has a connection to the oil and gas industry.  

Sulphur is extracted from the earth in a four step process. A hole is drilled down to the sulphur deposit. 3 pipes one inside the other are inserted into the hole. Hot water is pumped into the putter pipe. The hot water dissolves the sulphur. Air is pumped into the center pipe. The combination of the pressure from the water and the air forces the sulphur to the surface. When it cools it solidifies into its original solid form.

As we were walking by this unit with Saskatchewan plates I mentioned to Rose that who ever owned this vehicle was most likely an interesting person. The owner was a Vietnam vet who moved to Saskatchewan after the war. He spends the winter months some place in the south. This year he was camping on the beaches in the bayous
