Feb 10 Mandelay Nature Trail

As you wander through the swamplands, and it seems to a lesser degree throughout the state there many wild life refuges and nature trails. They are looked after by the State and some are looked after by the national parks. We walked this trail , about 2 kilometers, to see the alligators but no luck, they were all sleeping. Alligators sleep in the a hole in the levees in the winter and come out in the spring. A local person who we met on this trail told us that in the summer as you walk this trail you wait for the alligators to get of the trail so you can pass.

We met a mid 30's guy on this trail . He was taking pictures of the birds. Both him and his wife were biologists. He was from Scotland and his wife was originally from Minnesota. They had moved here from Scotland. One of the attraction to come here was the low cost of living. We don't find the food any cheaper, but maybe the housing.

Notice the Spanish moss hanging on the trees. When we were in Savanna Georgia last year
and here as well they told us that Henry Ford used Spanish moss in the cushions of his car seats.
More Spanish moss

This is an eastern red cedar. From a distance it looks like a normal red cedar but the bows are very different

The eastern red cedar here has needles as compared to bows at home

This is winter time here, if it was summer time it would be all green
