Whale watching in Guerrero Negro
The grey whales spend 3 months here in the Baja every winter and 3 summer months in Alaska. The round trip of 12500 miles takes about 3 months each way with the whales travelling around 80 miles a day . The young are born here, and matting occurs here. They are about 50 feet long and weigh 40,000 lbs.

There are hundreds of whales in this area, you could see the spouts of water in the distance in every direction |
|
Usually it is only the calves that approach the boat, but after about 10 minutes we had these monsters around the boat continually. |
|
You splash the water with your hands and the movement and the noise will make the whales approach the boat |
|
Some times there would be 5 or 6 around the boat at once |
|
The brown spots are barnacles that attach to the whales just like to a ship |
|
Some times they would relax and let you pet them for almost a minute |
Before we departed from the area we got to see them matting. That is pretty rare.

This barge full of salt, harvested from the lagunes, was waiting to be towed out to sea, where the salt would be transferred to an ocean going vessel for export

A sea lion was sunning himself on the corner of the deck |

That's very cool! I've never been nearly that close to a whale.
Does a whale ever get angry, sick, or extra playful and attack a tour boat? What size of boat were you in?
I am not aware of them getting angry, they were sure docile while we were there The tour boat was probably 18 or 20 foot fiberglass, Maximum number of passengers was 14 , we were only 7 so there was lots of room for everybody to pet the whales
